About the book. 

The German soldier Heinrich Becker returns home to Oppenheim am Rhein (in Germany) after horrific war experiences. There he meets Maria Trautwein, a half-Jewish woman. They fall in love during the turmoil of the Second World War.  Bombing raids, hunger, hardship, fear and horror accompany them on the difficult, rocky road in a time of hopelessness. Trade, barter and fear determine the anxious everyday lives of people in Germany. Surviving the cruel war is the watchword at home. While Heinrich Becker fights bitterly on the home front, his lover is sexually assaulted by a local group leader.  She wants to leave the Rhineland to escape from the clutches of the Hitler fanatic.  But fate has other plans for her.  Enemy fighter bombers fly over the vineyards and make the women's arduous field work on the home front more difficult.  Cruel death lurks everywhere, looking for its innocent war victims. The old town of Oppenheim is on fire as an enemy bombing squadron searches for its human victims. Child soldiers, war-wounded returnees and frail old people fight together in an anti-aircraft position high above the town against American fighter bombers before the town is taken by the American occupiers without a fight.

The novel mirrors the events among the German population at the end of the war in 1944/45.
